About Robbie Melville
Robbie Melville is a Melbourne-based guitarist and composer celebrated for his dynamic performances and inventive compositions. He began his musical journey in his teens and, in 2005, was appointed Principal Guitar Chair in the Australian Pops Orchestra, performing at venues such as Hamer Hall and the Sydney Opera House alongside artists like James Morrison, Marina Prior, and Guy Sebastian.
Melville's versatility has led to collaborations with a wide range of artists, including Stephen Magnusson, Carl Pannuzzo, Liz Frencham, Shane Howard, and Nat Bartsch.
His compositions have garnered several awards, notably the 2021 Johnny Dennis Music Award. In 2016, he received both the Industry and Orkeztra prizes in the Composition Competition for world music ensemble Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde with the piece "Tango In Pusan." Additionally, his composition "Junkyard" won first place in the Instrumental Category of the 2018 International Songwriting Competition.
Melville leads several ensembles that showcase his compositional prowess. His quintet, cleverhorse, released the album "Goodnight, Mr. Monster" in 2007, praised for its creativity by the Sydney Morning Herald. Their second album, "50" was released on the Jazzhead label in 2016. Another notable project is Antelodic, a trio featuring Melville on guitar and two saxophonists. They released their debut album, "Quiet Sufficient," in 2017, followed by "To Iceland! To Iceland!" in 2020 on ABC Jazz.
In 2023, Melville released "Tangled Trails," an introspective collection inspired by the 1921 silent film of the same name. The album serves as an imagined soundtrack, with each piece corresponding to scenes from the film, ranging from the wintery wilds of Canada to the melting pot of Roaring Twenties-era New York.
Beyond his ensemble work, Melville has contributed to recordings for artists such as Shane Howard, John Murry, and Liz Frencham. He has also toured internationally with Irish musicians Mundy and Roesy and performed with artists including Mary Doumany, Krystle Warren, Gallie, Aine Tyrrell, Carl Pannuzzo, Stephen Magnusson, Zoe Frater, Kristina Olsen, and Sarah Carroll.
Melville's dedication to exploring the intersections of folk melody, jazz harmony, and textural improvisation continues to enrich Melbourne's vibrant music scene.
