About Stephen Magnusson

Stephen Magnusson, born in 1969 in Melbourne, is a prominent Australian guitarist and composer known for his exceptional versatility and distinctive musical voice. He began his musical journey at a young age, receiving his first ukulele at three and his first guitar at six. By ten, he was performing publicly, showcasing an early passion for music. Magnusson pursued formal studies at the Victorian College of the Arts, where he honed his skills under the guidance of esteemed musicians such as Tony Gould, Bob Sedergreen, and Paul Grabowsky.

In the mid-1990s, Magnusson expanded his horizons by moving to Europe, where he taught at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Zurich and collaborated with international artists. During this period, he co-founded the ensemble SNAG, which gained recognition for its innovative approach to jazz and improvisation.

Upon returning to Australia in 2000, Magnusson's career continued to flourish. He co-won the National Jazz Guitar Award at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues in 2000, highlighting his prominence in the Australian jazz scene. His collaborative spirit led him to work with a diverse array of artists, including Charlie Haden, Archie Roach, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Paul Grabowsky, among others.

Magnusson's discography includes several notable projects. His ensemble MAGNET released a self-titled album in 2012, which won the 2013 Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. In 2007, he released "14 Little Creatures," a solo album that received critical acclaim for its intricate compositions and emotive performances.

In recognition of his contributions to music, Magnusson received the Melbourne Prize for Music Outstanding Musician Award in 2013. He continues to perform and record, engaging in projects that push the boundaries of jazz and contemporary music. His recent performances include collaborations with the trio STOZ, featuring bassist Sam Anning and drummer Dave Beck, showcasing his ongoing commitment to musical exploration and innovation.

Magnusson's influence extends beyond performance; he is also a dedicated educator, sharing his expertise with aspiring musicians and contributing to the development of Australia's vibrant music community.
