What was Nite Art?

Nite Art, first introduced in 2013, marked a milestone for Melbourne by joining a global movement of dynamic, accessible art experiences. Inspired by international events like Gallery Weekend Berlin, Hong Kong Artwalk, and Tokyo’s Roppongi Art Night, Nite Art brought a new vision to the way Melburnians could engage with art. This one-night annual event opens doors to a unique blend of gallery spaces, art installations, and interactive exhibitions across the city, offering a fresh approach to exploring Melbourne’s creative scene.

For one night each year, Nite Art transforms Melbourne’s CBD and North Melbourne into a bustling, open-air gallery. With 21 cutting-edge and experimental spaces participating in the event, visitors are guided through “art trails” designed to uncover established galleries and lesser-known artist-run spaces. By using the city itself as a canvas, Nite Art provides an accessible, engaging platform that lets visitors discover the breadth and depth of Melbourne’s artistic talent.

A digital platform complements the event, allowing visitors to plan their routes and access information about the artists and exhibitions featured. This integration of physical and digital experiences encourages a wider audience to participate, bringing a modern, interactive layer to the art experience. Nite Art’s format enables people to explore Melbourne’s artistic heart, moving freely between gallery spaces and public installations, creating a festival-like atmosphere in the heart of the city.

Nite Art was co-created by a team of creative industry professionals united by a passion for contemporary art. Founding partners include Deborah Stahle, founder of Artwalk Melbourne; Andrea Nixon, head of branding and communications consultancy Nixon Counsel; Andrew Ashton, the creative mind behind Work Art Life; and Jason McQuoid, director of the photography gallery Edmund Pearce. Together, they envisioned an event that would reimagine how Melbourne views and discusses art, fostering both public engagement and professional networking opportunities for artists.

The event stands out for its inclusion of both established and emerging artists, showcasing a wide variety of artistic expressions across mediums and themes. With installations appearing in unconventional venues, such as alleyways, rooftops, and historic buildings, Nite Art revitalizes urban spaces by presenting them as stages for creativity. This immersive approach helps foster a sense of community, inviting both art enthusiasts and casual visitors to connect with Melbourne’s vibrant art scene in a new and dynamic way.

Nite Art has become a celebrated highlight of Melbourne’s cultural calendar, offering a fresh perspective on the city's artistic landscape. By blending traditional gallery settings with surprising pop-up spaces, it brings art closer to the public and reinforces Melbourne’s reputation as a creative hub. Through its unique format and inclusive programming, Nite Art continues to shape Melbourne’s art scene, creating a memorable, once-a-year celebration that resonates with a broad audience and leaves a lasting impact on the city’s cultural fabric.
